WEST LOOP — After hustling for work when her own gallery first started, curator Angela Bryant knew she didn’t want others in the city to suffer the same fate.
“I feel very blessed and grateful to have several places to show art. But I know quite a few curators and they don’t have any walls,” she said.
Bryant runs galleries at Dominican University and A Bryant, her own space. But it was as curator for Design Cloud — a West Loop digital design studio — that she saw her opportunity to give emerging artists exposure.
So earlier this month, Bryant and Design Cloud founder Nick Stocking launched “Mount,” a rotating collection of curators and artists who will be paid to show their work at Design Cloud’s space at 118 N. Peoria St.
The gallery space has existed in the studio since it launched in 2011, but until now it’s been solely on Bryant to choose the artists for the space.
“I’d ultimately like for us to be like a beacon, where people can say, ‘Try to get into Mount, I hear it’s really good,’” Bryant said.
Artists and curators will be chosen by a five-person panel and those chosen will have their work shown at Design Cloud for three months in addition to receiving a $1,000 stipend and free branding and graphic consultation from Design Cloud designers.
Interested curators and artists can submit an application — along with a $25 application fee — on Design Cloud’s website. Deadline is Sept. 6.
