Robbers Target Parked Cars Near Mercy Hospital, Police Say

CHICAGO — Police have issued a community alert in the South Loop after they tracked an increase in thefts in July.

According to cops, thieves have been targeting parked cars in lots near Mercy Hospital, 2525 S. Michigan Ave. The robbers remove catalytic converters from automobile exhaust systems.

At least two incidents have been reported in the 2500 block of South Michigan Avenue — one on July 10 at 2:30 p.m. and another last Wednesday at 3:50 p.m. In the 2600 block, a converter was stolen around midnight on July 10.

Police described the thieves as black men — one of whom is about 25 years old with dreadlocks.
