MAYFAIR — At a recent meeting hosted by Ald. Margaret Laurino (39th), several "traffic calming" measures were proposed for a dangerous stretch of Foster Avenue.
But residents don't just want traffic to slow down — they want to halt it altogether by adding a stoplight.
Speed cameras, enhanced crosswalks and ramped up enforcement efforts don't go far enough, states a petition posted Tuesday to Change.org.
Mayfair resident Matthew Robertson crafted the online appeal, which calls for a stoplight at Foster and Kilbourn avenues, an intersection the petition says poses a "serious risk" to pedestrians.
"Neighborhood residents have learned how NOT to use this intersection," states the petition. "Nearby neighbors must drive their kids across the street to attend little league or soccer practice."
The petition is addressed to Laurino, the Chicago Department of Transportation, State Rep. John D'Amico (D-Chicago) and the Chicago Police Department. It's already well on its way toward a goal of 100 signatures.
