CHICAGO — After posting an "appalling" tweet about Chicago gun violence, Jeppson's Malort apologized for the flub and removed the post.

The company tweeted just before noon Thursday, "In a Chicago Summer riddled with gunfire and open volcano-like heat, there is only one weapon that can save you ..." accompanied by a picture of the uniquely-flavored liquor.

The post drew criticism, and Jeppson's removed the tweet and apologized.

"Sorry fellas. That was appalling & we didn't catch it until you put it in the right frame. We will learn," read one tweet, and later, "No apology can really heal this, but we are very sorry."

Since the beginning of 2013, more than 200 people have been murdered in Chicago.
