GRANT PARK — After my rare light-hearted chat about music with Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Monday, I hoped the boss would follow through on plans to check out one of my favorite bands, Delta Spirit, at Taste of Chicago.

Sadly, the mayor didn't make it on time.

When Delta Spirit took the stage in Grant Park, the mayor was at a West Side anti-violence rally, where he encouraged folks to "stand up and say these are our streets. These are not the streets of gang-bangers."

When Emanuel arrived to catch a bit of the band fun.'s show, he did have a short chat with Delta Spirit singer Matt Vasquez.

"I'm sorry, I was on the West Side. I apologize," Emanuel said.

"Oh, it's okay. Great food over there," said Vasquez, who lives in Brooklyn.

"No, no, no," the mayor told him. "I was on the West Side of the city at an anti-crime rally."

"Oh, shoot," Vasquez said.

No pun intended, of course.

But he certainly was giddy about meeting Emanuel, who he called "such a badass."

"That's so genius," he said when he saw his snapshot with the mayor. "The bulldog, himself."
