CHICAGO — A Metra employee was struck and killed by a train Friday, an agency spokesman said.

The employee was struck by Electric Line train No. 223 at 42nd Street at 1:30 p.m. while working on a crew doing track maintenance, Metra officials said in a statement.

The man was identified as 36-year-old Luis Mercado, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. Mercado, who lived in Berwyn, was pronounced dead on the scene just before 2 p.m. Friday.

Mercado had worked for Metra since 2001, and the accident is being investigated, officials said.

"The entire Metra family is deeply saddened by this tragic incident and the loss of one of our own," officials said in a statement. "We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Mercado."
