One Dead, 12 Wounded in Gunfire Saturday Night and Sunday

CHICAGO — One person is dead and 12 people were wounded by gunfire Saturday night and Sunday morning, bringing the weekend total to one dead, 22 injured.

The latest victims are a 2-year-old boy and his 27-year-old mother, who were shot near Murray Park in Englewood at about 6 p.m. Sunday evening.

The latest homicide was of a 24-year-old man shot in the head near a South Shore church he attended.

"I heard the pop-pop-pop, three bullets," the Rev. Issac Whittmon said. "I saw the man land from a distance."

A bullet just missed his son, he said.

"My knees are kind of weak," he said.

A 20-year-old man was shot in the right thigh at 12:30 Saturday afternoon in Belmont Cragin, said Officer Jose Estrada. The victim was taken in good condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital.

About an hour earlier, in Morgan Park, a 40-year-old man was shot in the left shoulder. The incident happened in the 1300 block of West 108th Street; he was taken in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. He was not cooperating with police, Estrada said.

At 3:50 Sunday morning, a 17-year-old boy was walking on the sidewalk in the 4400 block of West Congress Parkway when he was shot in the calf, police said. The boy was and taken to Loretto Hospital by family members.

A 21-year-old was in the 4100 block of West 47th Street when a black sedan approached and fired shots at about 3:15 a.m. He was hit in the hand and taken to Mt. Sinai in stable condition, police said.

About 15 minutes earlier, a 20-year-old man was shot in the 4500 block of South Wallace Avenue. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said.

In the 4400 block of South Wells Street, an 18-year-old man was leaving a party at about 1:25 a.m. when a grey minivan approached and fired shots, said Officer John Mirabelli, a police spokesman. The man was shot in the leg and taken to University of Illinois at Chicago Hospital.

Five minutes before, a 23-year-old man was shot while walking between North Central Avenue and West Washington Boulevard. He was taken to West Suburban Hospital, police said.

On Friday night at about 11 p.m., a 16-year-old boy was walking down the sidewalk in the 11400 block of South Halsted Street when five men approached. One of the men brought out a gun and fired shots. The boy was shot in the foot and was in stable condition. No one was in custody in connection with the shooting, police said.

At 10:45 p.m., a 32-year-old man was shot while standing on a second-floor landing in an apartment in the 200 block of West 112th Place. A bullet struck his right foot, and he was taken to Christ Hospital in good condition, police said.

Earlier on Friday night, a 30-year-old man was shot in the left side of his body after an altercation. The shooting occurred at about 7 p.m. in the 2500 block of East 104th street. The man is in stable condition, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman.
