CHICAGO — A 70-year-old man died after being hit by a Metra train Wednesday morning near his home in South Shore, officials said.
The man was hit by an inbound Metra Electric train near the South Shore station at 73rd Street and Exchange Avenue about 9:30 a.m., Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said.
The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead at 10:10 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
The man's death appeared to be a suicide, according to the medical examiner's office. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.
Metra police were investigating how the man ended up on the tracks Wednesday morning, Reile said.
The train that hit the man, the No. 316, was delayed for about an hour, according to Reile.
