Square Roots Fest Is Looking for the Best Fiddlers in the Midwest

LINCOLN SQUARE — If you know your way around a bow and strings, here's your chance to compete for the title of the best fiddler in the Midwest.

The 11th annual Midwest Fiddle Championship will be held in conjunction with the Square Roots fest, culminating in the Fiddle Club of the World Battle of the Bands July 13.

Registration is now open to musicians in both youth (under 16) and open divisions for soloists and fiddle teams.

Soloists are permitted to play with a single accompaniest. Teams must include a fiddle and second lead instrument and are also allowed one accompanying instrument.

All styles are welcome: old-time, bluegrass, Irish, Cajun, Mexican, Polish, Swedish, etc.

The contest kicks off with the first round of the youth division, 11 a.m., July 7, at Old Town School's Szold Hall, 4545 N. Lincoln Ave. Youth finals will be held at 6:30 p.m., July 11, at Old Town School's Maurer Hall, 4544 N. Lincoln Ave.

The open division first round is also scheduled for 6:30 p.m., July 11, at Maurer Hall, with the finals taking place at 1:30 p.m., July 13, at Maurer.

The Battle of the Bands competition, 6:30 p.m., July 13, at Maurer Hall, is by invitation-only for participants but the public will play a key role in choosing the winner: The band that gets the most people up and dancing wins.
