CHICAGO — A man died after crashing a BMW into an empty South Side home Thursday morning, authorities said.

He crashed into a single-family house on 87th Street and Michigan Avenue in Chatham sometime before 5:30 a.m., Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said.

The man was later identified as Derek Thomas, 48, of the 9000 block of South Dante Avenue, by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Thomas had been driving fast, westbound on 87th Street from Indiana Avenue when he lost control, said Officer John Mirabelli, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

The man was pinned in his car and pronounced dead on the scene, the Fire Department said.

The home was vacant, and no one else was hurt, Langford said. A gas main was ruptured when the car crashed, and authorities shut off the gas on the scene to stop the leak, Mirabelli said.

Authorities were investigating the crash Thursday morning.
