LAKEVIEW — The old Bleeding Heart Bakery building has been demolished and will soon be replaced with a four-story mixed-use building.

Barrett Homes plans to construct a condo building with first-floor retail on the property at 1351 W. Belmont Ave., near Southport Avenue, said Mike Barrett, an owner of the company.

Bleeding Heart Bakery closed in August after nine years at different locations in the city, and was marred with controversies over selling bank-owned equipment and complaints from former employees. Its punk-rock-inspired sign adorned the building until it was demolished.

Barrett hopes to have the new building up within a year.

Barrett Homes is known for building residential property in Lakeview, including a $2.89 million single-family home that was recently featured in Chicago magazine.
