CHICAGO — Two women walking in the middle of a River North Street were sent to the hospital after a drunken driver hit them Thursday night, police said.

The wome were hit in the 100 block of West Ontario Street about 10:10 p.m., said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

The two 26-year-old women were crossing the street in the middle of the block — not at a crosswalk — when a westbound car hit them, Estrada said. The women were sent to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where they were listed in "stable" condition Friday morning.

The driver of the car, Michael Lapato of Lisle, was charged with four misdemeanors: driving under the influence, negligent driving, failure to reduce speed and failure to yield to pedestrians, Estrada said,
