CHICAGO — A 9-year-old boy was seriously injured after he was attacked by a dog on the Far South Side in Roseland on Sunday night, police said.

The boy was playing in a backyard in the 200 block of West 112th Place about 8 p.m. when a neighbor's dog jumped a fence and lunged at him, said Officer John Mirabelli, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

He was bitten on his arms and legs and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition, Mirabelli said.

Mirabelli did not have information about the breed of the dog. The dog's owner was cited for failure to have a dog license, failure to have proof of a rabies vaccination for the dog and failure to keep the dog under restraint.

The dog was taken to Animal Care and Control to determine whether it has rabies, according to Mirabelli.
