ROSCOE VILLAGE — Lane Tech College Prep High School lived up to its "School of Champions" moniker over the weekend, taking first place in Chicago Public Schools Boys and Girls Outdoor Track and Field championships.
Lane's boys track team bested arch rival and defending champ Whitney Young, recapturing the crown the Indians lost last year after a six-year winning streak.
Senior Marcelo Burbano took first place in the 3,200-meter run, and Abraham Deleon was first in shotput.
After knocking on the door the last two years with second-place finishes, Lane's girls track squad captured the top spot in 2013. The Indians have dominated city track the last decade, with this year's title added to victories in 2004-08.
Joanna Podosek, already crowned city cross-country champ in October, took home the individual top honor in the 1,600-meter final.
Coaches Kris Roof and Francisco Marchan now take their squads to sectionals, scheduled for Thursday.
Boys tennis, under first-year coach Eric Cromer, notched a number of victories in the individual city championship, also held last weekend.
Yahn Gawrit was runner up at No. 1 singles; Alex Keller was champion at No. 2 singles; Mitch Stoop and Chris Primer teamed up for the No. 2 doubles crown, and Sasha Salk and Austin Handler were No. 3 doubles champs.
The team competition will be decided May 11.
