CHICAGO — Late night travelers on the Dan Ryan, beware: parts of the South Side expressway will be closed for construction in the early morning hours on Sunday.

The outbound express lanes from 47th to 67th streets will be closed from 1-9 a.m. Sunday morning.

The closure is for construction of the Metra Englewood Flyover bridge, a federally funded project that will allow Metra Rock Island trains to bypass the congested Englewood Interlocker that now serves Amtrak, freight, and Metra trains. According to a statement from the Illinois Department of Transportation, once complete, the flyover bridge "will carry Metra Rock Island tracks over the Englewood Interlocker and tracks used by Amtrak and freight trains at 63rd and State."

The project is part of the federally-funded CREATE program, which is focused on easing rail congestion in the Chicago region.
