KENWOOD — The Commission on Chicago Landmarks honored two Kenwood homeowners for removing the aluminum siding from their home.

Josh Meyer and Catherine Beard were one of 14 winners of the Preservation Excellence Awards for the restoration of their 1880s Queen Anne-style home.

“Good projects always start with good homeowners,” said Eleanor Gorski, the director of historic preservation for the city.

Meyer and Beard’s home at 4811 S. Kimbark Ave. in the Kenwood Historic District was designated a city landmark after the owners removed the aluminum siding and restored the former porch.

The porch was demolished, and Meyer and Beard built a new porch matching the style using the scarring on the house from the former porch and the indentations in the lawn.

The couple were presented with a plaque by Housing and Economic Development Commissioner Andrew Mooney and members of the Commission on Chicago Landmarks at an April 30 ceremony.
