Black Dog Gelato Reopens on Belmont, Damen Coming Soon

ROSCOE VILLAGE — Jessica Oloroso has a message for fans of her gourmet gelato: "Not to worry. We will be open."

Oloroso closed her two Black Dog Gelato shops for the winter, a departure from her usual year-round schedule.

The Roscoe Village shop at 1955 W. Belmont Ave. finally re-opened in April but with limited weekend hours. A tease, like fickle spring itself.

The good news: This weekend, the store will switch to summer hours — noon to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday — serving some of its signature flavors (hello, goat cheese cashew caramel) and new ones, too.

But the Ukrainian Village shop remains closed, prompting slightly confused customers to take to Black Dog's Facebook page with concern and gentle pestering.

"So, are you guys open again?"

"When will your original location open?"

"Please open Damen!!!"

While these comments have gone unanswered on Facebook, Oloroso said she is working to re-open the shop at 859 N. Damen Ave. within two weeks. "The absolute latest would be May 15," she said.

Remodeling is to blame for the delay.

"We're trying to change the floor plan a little to add seating," Oloroso said. "We've cleared out the space to give us time to work, so it kind of looks abandoned. And because I'm being vague, I'm sure that's not helping."

If it's any consolation, the Damen shop will stay open one hour later than the Belmont location. And customers might be treated to new products this summer beyond gelato, though Oloroso was mum on details.

"Everything's still in development. I don't want to disappoint," she said.

There is one other project in the works that Oloroso can mention: "I'm seven months pregnant."
