CHICAGO — Logan Square and Uptown residents can soon buy pastries, fruits, veggies and other summery treats at city farmers markets during the evening now that "spinoff" night markets are coming to the neighborhoods, the city announced Tuesday.
Each year, the city hosts farmers markets throughout the summer, and new to the table are the night market spinoffs as well as a new monthly market at 2720 W. Devon Ave. in the Republic Bank parking lot in the West Ridge neighborhood.
The night bazaars in Logan Square and Uptown will feature live performances of "Romeo and Juliet" presented by theater company The Hypocrites.
The markets, which kick off on May 11 and run through the end of October, feature produce, flowers, baked goods and performances, as well as arts and crafts.
Outdoor festivities officially open at Daley Plaza on May 16, when the winner of the sixth annual Reusable Bag Design Contest will be announced.
Finalists in the design contest are Juan Delao and Jose Melgoza from Lane Tech College Prep High School in Roscoe Village and Mara Hantanosas from Mather High School in West Ridge, the city said.
"Our Farmers Markets are cultural touchstones for the city, but more importantly they bring fresh product directly to our residents and visitors," Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a statement.
"We are proud to have added five new markets on the West Side last year, bringing a variety of fresh fruits, fresh vegetables and valuable nutritional information to underserved neighborhoods. This year, the new Spinoff Night Markets in Uptown and Logan Square will elevate and expand neighborhood cultural assets, a priority of the Chicago Cultural Plan."
