CHICAGO — Kindergarteners and first graders won't have to take an assessment test for the remainder of the school year, Chicago Public Schools officials said.
The decision was reached after months of discussion and was made in order to streamline the district's assessment types and "to maximize time for learning in the classroom," district officials said.
“Assessments are an important tool for measuring a student’s academic growth and success, but we must be mindful to strike the right balance with instruction time, which is vitally important for the academic growth and engagement of our students, especially in the early grades,” CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett said in a statement.
The district is also paring back, though not eliminating, assessment tests for second graders.
