CHICAGO — An off-duty police sergeant following robbery suspects on the North Side Tuesday night avoided injury after one of the robbers fired at him, police said.
The off-duty sergeant spotted a robbery about 11:35 p.m. in the 4800 block of West Foster Avenue and used his personal car to go after two suspects as they drove away, said Officer Michael Sullivan, a Chicago Police spokesman.
One of the suspects fired at the sergeant from the car in the 4600 block of North Kilpatrick Avenue in Irving Park shortly after, Sullivan said. The sergeant was not injured and did not return fire, Sullivan said.
The two suspects drove onto the Edens Expy., and Illinois State Police chased after them, Sullivan said. A State Police spokeswoman was not immediately available to comment.
The suspects ended up in the suburb of North Chicago, where they were arrested. Charges against them are pending, Sullivan said.
