UPTOWN — Awake Cafe has closed in Uptown and is looking for a new location after five years in the neighborhood.

"It has been a pleasure to be part of your community for many years," read a note to customers posted in the store last week. "April 14 will be the last day we have this honor."

The owners of the cafe were not immediately available for comment.

But a barista at the shuttered cafe, 736 W. Irving Park Rd., said Monday that the owners were closing the shop to find a store space with a bigger kitchen.

"We're a little limited here," she said, declining to be named because she had not been cleared to speak with reporters.

A handful of staff was still at the cafe Monday morning making sandwiches for the business's other locations — a temporary task before they are transferred to other stores, employees said.
