COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A fourth man was charged in the October 2012 murder of a 73-year-old South Shore man in what prosecutors said was the consequence of rivaling gangs.
Malcolm X. Terry, 22, of the 1400 block of West 67th Place, was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of William Thomas. He joins a roster of three other men who were charged in the murder earlier this month.
Terry's bail was set at $1.5 million Wednesday.
Aramis McKinzie, 18, of the 1400 block of South Canal Street, Garlin Minor, 19, of the 600 block
of East 95th Street, and Akeem L. Simmons, 20, of the 1400 block of East 68th Street, were also charged with first-degree murder and appeared in court at the beginning of March.
Prosecutors said there's a fifth suspect who hasn't been charged in the case.
Authorities and prosecutors said Thomas died after being shot not far from his home in the 6800 block of South East End Avenue at about 7:15 p.m. on Oct. 12. Thomas lived in the 1700 block of East 68th Street, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
Thomas' killing was the result of a rivalry between the Mall Town and Murder Town gangs, prosecutors said Sunday during bond court.
Thomas was shot multiple times in the head, resulting in his death, Assistant State's Attorney Jim Pontrelli said. Terry served as one of the lookouts, Pontrelli said.
Simmons admitted to police that he and the other men were in Mall Town territory with plans to retaliate for an earlier dispute, the Tribune reported, citing information from Simmons' court hearing. The Tribune reported that Williams was not a target, though it was unclear how the 73-year-old man became caught in the crosshairs.
A witness identified Terry in a lineup, and he was arrested Friday, according to prosecutors and court documents.
Earlier this month, McKinzie and Simmons were given bail amounts of $4 million, while Minor's bail was set at $3 million.
