LAKEVIEW — Think getting a good deal should be a bright, friendly experience?

So does Jeffrey Giles. That's part of why he's opening up dollar store Dandy Dollar at 3176 N. Clark St., near Belmont Ave.

"This is one step above someone's stereotypical image of a dollar store," he said. "We're trying to get it a look that's a little bright."

The former business analyst has always dreamed of leaving corporate life and opening a neighborhood business. He'd tossed around a few ideas, but he latched onto the discovery and excitement of finding a good deal at a dollar store.

The 1,100-square-foot Dandy Dollar will feature hundreds of items, from staples like cleaners and snacks to unique jewelry, Giles said. And everything will be priced at a dollar or less.

Beyond the things for sale, Giles wants customers to feel like they have a relationship with the store. If somebody's looking for an item that's not there, employees will advise on where to find it, or offer tips on alternatives, Giles said.

"We really want to have a connection with our customers," he said.

The store will employ four part-time employees. He plans to open in a few weeks.
