CHICAGO — Police said a man tried to kidnap a 16-year-old girl in Bronzeville on her way to school Monday.

The attacker tried to force the girl into a white van in the 4400 block of South Prairie Avenue about 7:35 a.m., police said in a community alert.

The man noticed someone nearby and took off in the van without the girl, said officer Michael Sullivan, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

The police alert described the suspect as a light-complexioned black man, 20-25 years old, 5-foot-7  to 5-foot-8 inches tall and 160 to 170 pounds. He was wearing a gray baseball cap and a gray mock collar sweater, according to the alert.

Police described the suspect's car as a white conversion-type van with burgundy stripes on the side.

Police asked anyone with information to call 312-747-8380.
