CHICAGO — A Chicago firefighter and two civilians were hurt in a snowy crash Tuesday morning involving a fire engine on its way back to a firehouse in Canaryville, authorities said.
The fire engine got into a collision in the 5100 block of South Union Avenue sometime before 11:40 a.m., Chicago Fire Department spokesman Will Knight said.
A woman driving a 1994 Chevrolet pickup drove through a red light at 51st Street and Union Avenue, said officer John Mirabelli, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.
Mirabelli said the pickup struck the rear left tire of a fire engine on its way back to a nearby firehouse after responding to an emergency. The pickup truck was left with "extensive" front-end damage, Mirabelli said.
The woman and a man who was riding with her were taken to Stroger Hospital in fair-to-serious condition, officials said. Mirabelli said the firefighter was taken to Rush University Medical Center for observation.
The driver of the pickup is expected to be charged with driving too fast for conditions, Mirabelli said. The accident happened as a snowstorm raged in the city.
