LINCOLN PARK — An area once known for its Weed Street nightlife moved one step further in its transformation Friday with the opening of a massive Anthropologie store.

The popular women's retailer, which is known for its fashionable clothing and home decor, held a sneak peak opening Thursday night for some of its long-time customers and opened its doors to the public Friday.

The business is located at the intersection of North Avenue and Fremont Street in The Shops of Fremont development, and was packed Friday afternoon on its opening day.

The four-parcel Shops of Fremont development, which is boundaried by Weed Street, Fremont Street, North Avenue and Kingsbury Street, totals 2.5 acres.

The new Anthropologie and a soon-to-open Williams Sonoma are situated on the first parcel, but the other three remain vacant.

CRM Properties, which is developing the site, most recently built the Whole Foods just around the corner from Anthropologie on Kingsbury Street, which at 75,000 square feet was the third largest Whole Foods in the world when it opened in 2009.

Anthropologie has three other Chicago locations, at 111 E. Chicago Ave., 2532 N. Southport Ave., and 108 N. State St.
