Jesse Jackson Jr., Sandi Jackson Expected to Plead Guilty Wednesday

By Mark Konkol | February 19, 2013 7:41pm

CHICAGO — Former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Chicago) and his wife, former Ald. Sandi Jackson, are expected to plead guilty Wednesday to federal charges in Washington, D.C.

Jackson Jr. is scheduled to appear in federal court at 9:30 a.m. Chicago time Wednesday. Sandi Jackson is scheduled to appear at 1:30 p.m.

Both will go before Judge Robert L. Wilkins in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Prosecutors allege in charges brought Friday that Jackson Jr. misspent more than $750,000 in campaign funds for purchases ranging from fur capes to Michael Jackson memorabilia.

Sandi Jackson was charged with cheating on her taxes.

Jackson Jr. could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine as part of a reported plea deal. His wife could face up to three years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.

Jackson Jr. dropped out of the public eye last summer, and turned up in treatment for bipolar disorder at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

Despite not campaigning, the congressman kept his seat, but resigned soon after reelection in the midst of a federal investigation.

Sandi Jackson also stepped down from her job as the city's 7th Ward alderman.
