Coyotes Spotted on University of Chicago Campus

HYDE PARK — Two coyotes were spotted running across the University of Chicago campus early Wednesday morning.

Coyotes are occasionally seen in Burnham Park near Hyde Park and along the south lakeshore, but the two coyotes seen along the Midway Plaisance is the first time in recent years that they have been spotted so far from the lake.

A video, originally posted online by NBC Chicago, show the two coyotes leisurely running east along the Midway Plaisance toward Jackson Park from Washington Park.

Authorities in the suburbs, where the animals are more common, have issued warnings in the last week that mating season for coyotes is under way and residents should not leave their pets outside unattended.

If an encounter is unavoidable, it is suggested that people use loud noises and threatening gestures to scare the animals away.
