CHICAGO — A man who attempted a stroll on a frozen Lake Michigan about 300 yards off Monroe Harbor was arrested Tuesday morning, police said.

Police got a call about 6:50 a.m. that a man was on the ice off Balbo Avenue and Lake Shore Drive, said Officer Jose Estrada, a police spokesman. He was about 300 yards off the harbor, Estrada said.

The 20-year-old was walking north along a break wall separating Monroe Harbor and Lake Michigan and falling repeatedly, Estrada said.

Ghassan Albraidi, of the 100 block of North Harbor Drive, was charged with reckless conduct, a misdemeanor offense, said Officer Laura Kubiak, a police spokeswoman.

Officers from the Chicago Police Marine Unit intercepted Albraidi and arrested him around 7:15 a.m. He was taken to the marine safety unit and examined on the scene as a precaution, Estrada said. He declined further medical attention.

Police said they did not know why Albraidi ventured onto the lake.
