CHICAGO — A man died Monday, a day after being shot on the street in Little Village, officials said.

Salvador Ponce, 31, of the 2700 block of South Komensky Avenue, was walking on the 3000 block of South Kedvale Avenue about 3:45 p.m. Sunday when gunman emerged from a gangway and yelled a gang slogan, said Chicago Police spokesman Veejay Zala.

That man then "lit him up," said Zala, shooting Ponce multiple times and at least once in the head.

Ponce was initially taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition. He died Monday at 1:45 p.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Ponce's brother, David Ponce, said the family did not wish to comment on the death Tuesday but said, "We loved our brother very much."
