1 Dead, 4 Wounded in Wednesday Shootings

CHICAGO — A man was killed and four others were wounded in shootings across the city on Wednesday.

A 35-year-old man was shot dead in the 1000 block of North Avers Avenue sometime before 6 p.m. when a man got out of a light-colored van and fired on the victim, hitting him in the torso, police said. 

Elton Johnson was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:17 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

The shooter fled the scene in the van and further details were not immediately available, police said.

Also on the West Side Wednesday night, two men were shot about 9 p.m. in an Austin shop, police said.

Police said two men were playing an after-hours dice game in the 300 block of South Cicero Avenue when two people walked in and announced a robbery. One of them pulled a gun on the men and shot them, hitting a 30-year-old man in his right arm and a 38-year-old in his leg, police said.

The robbers took off from the shop with an unknown amount of cash and personal items, police said.

Police said the wounded men were taken to to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.

In Englewood on the South Side, a 27-year-old man was shot during a robbery about 1:45 p.m., police said.

Police said the man was in a car in the 7100 block of South Carpenter Street when a shooter walked up to the car, opened a door and shot the victim, striking him in the leg. The attacker announced a robbery, and the man complied, police said.

The gunman ran from the scene with an unknown amount of cash, police said. The 27-year-old was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital in stable condition, police said.

Earlier Wednesday, a man was shot near an urban garden in River North.

Police said the 19-year-old man was shot in the head and in the back near West Chicago and North Chicago avenues about 1:10 p.m. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious-to-critical condition.

No arrests had been made in any of the shootings as of Thursday morning.
