CHICAGO — A 22-year-old man charged with animal cruelty was held on $25,000 bail Sunday.

Christopher Bohannon, of the 9900 block of South Carpenter Street in Brainerd, was charged with two counts of cruelty to animals.

Bohannon was found to be mistreating his two female pit bulls when officers announced a search warrant before forcing entry to his home, prosecutors said Sunday.

A search of the home revealed one pit bull tied to a door in the basement. Another pit bull was later found after Bohannon confirmed two dogs lived in the home, according to authorities.

The "entire floor" of Bohannon's basement was covered in feces and urine — the smell of which was "overpowering," according to the police report. Both dogs had been living in their own excrement, the report said.

Ownership of both animals has since been relinquished to Animal Care and Control.

Bohannon's next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.
