SOUTH SHORE — A 20-year-old man was shot and killed in South Shore neighborhood on November 10, just a few blocks from this home.
Anthony Bagsby, of the 7400 block of South Shore Drive, was shot just before 1 p.m.. on a Saturday afternoon and pronounced dead several hours later at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to a spokesperson with the Chicago Police Department.
Police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak said three to four men approached Bagsby and shot him several times on the 2600 block of East 79th Street.
Kubiak said Bagsby had a “lengthy criminal record” and was known to have gang affiliations.
A memorial of stuffed teddy bears and a poster with messages from friends stood on the corner of East 79th Street and South Saginaw Avenue the Tuesday following Bagsby’s death. The poster had notes addressed to “Bud,” Bagsby’s nickname according to people standing by the memorial who say they knew him.
One man standing by the memorial declined to give his name but did describe who Bagsby was.
“He was a nice guy,” the man said. “He was a gang banger, but somebody dropped something on Anthony, so his mental state was not even really there anymore.”
The man remembered Bagsby as a “laid back, mellow guy” who never said too much but added he “hung around with the wrong crowd.”
“He was out here everyday,” the man said, adding he believed Bagsby was homeless when he died.
Bagsby’s family could not be reached for comment, but the man by Bagsby’s memorial called his murder “senseless.”
“Bud was a nice guy,” he said. “People like him need help out here, man, and it’s a shame that people don’t reach out to people like that.”
