CHICAGO — Matthew Jackson and Darryl Daviston had been friends since childhood — long before Daviston was violently killed by two gunshots to his chest on April 15.

“He was like a little cousin to me,” Jackson, 24, said. “I knew him a long time, from when we used to live in the projects at Stateway Gardens.”

According to Jackson, Daviston, 23, was down-to-earth and known as a friendly guy.

“He loved to go out, dress good and dance,” Jackson said.

Daviston was shot in the 1300 block of South Springfield Avenue in Lawdale, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Daviston’s death appeared to be a simple robbery, Jackson said. He attempted to run from the gunman, but not much else is known. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

“They be on that stuff out here,” he said. “They’ll shoot you for your coat."
