CHICAGO — Chicago patrol officers escorted six people to safety from a residential fire in Grand Crossing early Friday morning, police said.
The fire occurred in a six-unit building in the 400 block of East 66th Street about 12:15 a.m.
During routine neighborhood checks, officers saw smoke coming from the window of a first-floor apartment, notified dispatchers and entered the building through the front door, police said.
Six people, including an elderly handicapped resident, were escorted from the building after police knocked on doors of individual units.
The residents were placed in police cars while the fire was extinguished, police said. There were no injuries reported, and most of the residents were able to return to their homes.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
