CHICAGO — The off-duty Chicago police officer who was shot by a reputed gang member during a botched robbery in Clearing West earlier this week had his 2-year-old child in tow, police said Saturday.
Police say Mario Froylan, 27, of the western suburb of Summit, shot a cop in the chest and wrist after demanding his wallet as the officer had stepped out of the car to take his son out of his car seat on 6300 block of South Nashville Avenue on the Southwest Side.
The officer's wrist was broken, but police said the bullet allegedly fired by Froylan did not penetrate the officer's chest cavity.
The officer returned fire, and at least ten shots were fired between the officer and Froylan, Area Central Commander Anthony Riccio said Saturday. The child was not injured in the exchange, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said.
