CHICAGO — A Metra train struck a car Monday night, demolishing the vehicle and injuring two people, authorities said.

The train hit the vehicle at the intersection of 71st Street and Cornell Avenue in the South Shore neighborhood around 5:30 p.m., said Michael Gillis, a spokesman for Metra.

Train 334 on Metra's South Chicago branch struck the car at the Stony Island station, Gillis said.

Two injured drivers were removed from the vehicle at 1631 E. 71st St. near the Stony Island Station and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, one in critical condition and another in fair condition, according to the Chicago Fire Department. At least one of the victims was pinned inside the car, fire officials said. The victims' injuries were not known.
