At Least 9 Injured in Shootings

At least nine people were wounded in shootings Saturday night and Sunday morning.

A security guard disrupted an armed robbery on the 8800 block of South Burley Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood at about 5:30 p.m. when he shot the would-be robber in the back. Police said Michael Wilson, 31, of the 9000 block of South Colfax Avenue, was shot after pointing a handgun at the security guard.

Fearing for his life and the safety of others, the security guard opened fire, police said. Wilson was charged Sunday with one count of armed robbery and four counts of aggravated assault. He was taken to Christ Hopsital, and later transported to Northwestern Hospital for treatment.

A 26-year-old man was shot in the left hip at 5:30 p.m. on the 4200 block of West Washington Boulevard in West Garfield Park. He was shot after he was confronted by two men who began rifling through the victim's pockets. The victim, who police said was a known gang member, was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition. Police are looking for the shooters.

At about 8:20 p.m., near the intersection of 104th and Aberdeen streets in Washington Heights, a 26-year-old man was wounded when an unknown number of males approached him and began shooting. The victim, who police said has gang affliations, was shot in the right leg. He was taken to Christ Hospital in good condition. Police continue to search for the offenders.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported a 26-year-old man was shot in the back and a 60-year-old man was hit in the foot during a drive-by shooting on the 100 block of East 51st Street in Fuller Park shortly after 9 p.m. The younger man was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition; the older man was takne to Saint Bernard Hospital in good condition, the newspaper said. Two people are in custody.

The Sun-Times reported a man was shot in the hand at South Prairie Avenue and East 68th Street around 11:45 p.m.

The Sun-Times also reported two men were shot while walking on the 4100 block of West 16th Street in Lawndale around 2:45 a.m. Sunday. A 33-year-old man was shot in the right hand and buttocks, and a 26-year-old man was hit in the right thigh. Both were taken in stable condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.

A 22-year-old man was shot in the abdomen on the 2200 block of West 18th Place in Pilsen's Heart of Chicago district around 3:30 a.m. Police said the victim is a gang member. He was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition. No arrests were made, and police continue to investigate.
