CHICAGO — A 3-year-old child slept peacefully inside a van as it was stolen and later abandoned in South Shore Thursday night, police said.

The child's mother had parked her Dodge Caravan in the 7800 block of South Essex Avenue around 10 p.m. and was about to ring the doorbell of a relative when she saw a man in his late teens or early 20s jump into the van and drive off, police said.

Neighboors reported the theft and the car's description, and officers found the van minutes later, abandoned in the 7800 block of South Yates Boulevard.

The 3-year-old apparently was still sleeping in his car seat, police said.

No suspects are in custody, police said.
