CHICAGO — A local gang member was charged in the murder and armed robbery of a West Side man who was gunned down in April, police said Thursday.

Dandre Lofton, 26, of the 3700 block of West Polk Street in East Garfield Park, was charged with the April 15 murder and armed robbery of Darryl Daviston, 23, authorities said. Police said Lofton is a gang member.

Daviston was allegedly robbed before being shot dead about 1:43 a.m. in the 1300 block of South Springfield Avenue on April 15, police and witnesses said. Daviston was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:27 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Matthew Jackson, 24, said he'd been friends with Daviston since childhood and described him as a down-to-earth, friendly guy who loved to go out and dance.

“He was like a little cousin to me,” Jackson said. “I knew him a long time, from when we used to live in the projects at Stateway Gardens.”

But Jackson said he was aware of the dangers of living on the West Side and said armed robberies are an unfortunate reality of the city.

“They be on that stuff out here,” Jackson said. “They’ll shoot you for your coat."
