CHICAGO — A man was found shot dead Sunday evening on a South Side street.

The man was shot sometime before 6 p.m. Sunday in the 6600 block of South Blackstone Avenue, police said. When officers arrived, they found him lying on the street with a gunshot wound to his head, police said.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:38 p.m., police said.

A woman who lives on the block and asked not to be named said she heard "a lot of shots" Sunday. The woman declined to identify herself because she feared for her safety.

"If they find out you saw something, you could get killed," she said. The neighbor said she was in her bedroom and dropped to the floor when she heard shots ring out. Her daughter had just gotten off the bus near the murder scene but ran back on after the shots were fired, the woman said.

A woman said she was getting off a bus one block north at the corner of East 67th Street and South Dorchcester Avenue when she heard gunfire.

"They started shooting," said Keisha Brown, 25, who would not offer further details. "I grabbed my baby and got back on the bus."

The victim, who is believed to be in his 50s, had not been identified as of Monday morning, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

No other information was available early Monday, police said.
