CHICAGO — A Woodlawn man was fatally shot inside a car in the South Shore in what police believe might be a gang-related killing, authorities said.

Darius Hartfield, 22, was sitting inside a Ford Taurus in the 6800 block of South Ridgeland Avenue about 8:45 p.m. when a gunman walked up and fired into the car, hitting Hartfield several times, authorities said.

Hartfield got out of the car and ran down the road to the 1700 block of East 69th Street, police said.

He reportedly rang the doorbell of an apartment building and told someone to 'Call the police, I've been shot,' said resident Lucy Williams, 74, who lives in the building.

Hartfield, who lived in the 1600 block of East 67th Street, a few blocks away in Woodlawn, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just before 11 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

South Ridgeland Avenue resident Celita Hart, 23, said she was laying out her kids' clothes for the next day of school when she heard the shots ring out.

Hart and her children constantly hear gunfire in their neighborhood, leaving her and her children unnerved, she said.

"It's kind of scary," said Hart, a medical assistant. "I'm ready to move from over here."

No suspects were in custody as of Thursday morning, police said.
