Pozolada Cookoff to Raise Money For Youth Arts Program

By Casey Cora | November 28, 2012 10:38am

BRIDGEPORT — A piping hot bowl of pozole is a ritualistic dish typically reserved for special occasions with loved ones.

From that community-minded spirit arose the Pozolada, an annual fundraiser thrown by ProsArts, a youth arts program serving kids in the Pilsen, Bridgeport, Back of the Yards and Lower West Side neighborhoods.

Now in its fourth year, the Pozolada brings together families, artists and chefs for a night of talking and tasting. It will be held Dec. 1 from 6-10 p.m at Bridgeport’s Co-Prospersity Sphere, 3219-21 S. Morgan St.

“It’s a good way for the community to come together to celebrate art programming for youth,” said ProsArts spokeswoman Diana Pando.

New this year, guests will act as judges for the 14 different pozoles to determine the winner of the Cuchara de Oro (Golden Spoon) award. The stew, made with hominy and meat, is a holiday tradition in Mexican households and comes in green, white, red and vegetarian varieties.

In addition to a handful of family and individual entries, the tastings at the Pozolada will include offerings from Estrella Negra and De Colores restaurants and chefs Ashley Garcia and Katherine August.

Tickets cost in $30 advance or $35 at the door. Tickets for kids 12 and under cost $12. Proceeds will help pay for programming at ProsArts, which was recently awarded by the Grant for Good program and the Chicago Community Trust’s SmartGrowth initiative.

During the Pozolada, ProsArts program leaders are expected to reveal the organization’s new name, which Pando said will “reflect their main focus of developing youth leaders through arts programming and bring a more up-to-date image of the organization.”
