ROGERS PARK — A 55-year-old grandfather was beaten to death by his son in the victim's West Albion Avenue home, authorities said.

Richard Lengyel, 55, of the 1700 block of West Albion, was assaulted at his home Jan. 3 and died from cerebral hemorrhage and multiple injuries two days later at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Lengyel’s death was ruled a homicide and his son, Steven Lengyel, 22, was charged with murder after being initially charged with aggravated domestic battery, according to court records and reports.

The victim's son pleaded not guilty earlier this year, according to court records, but the status of his case was not immediately clear.

Before Richard Lengyel died, he was able to tell police his son had assaulted him, according to reports.

Lengyel, a lifelong Chicagoan, had three grandchildren and was a surrogate father of two, according to his obituary.

"My deepest sympathy to the Lengyel family," wrote Ellen Laun, of Melrose Park, on the funeral home's website. "Rick was a great friend to me many years ago and I was very saddened by hearing of his passing."
