MANHATTAN — Good news for chronic cell phone losers.

The city has launched a new web feature aimed at reuniting absent-minded taxicab passengers with their wayward property.

Passengers who forget items in cabs can now use the taxi's medallion number to track down the contact information for their driver's garage through 311's Yellow Taxi Lost and Found Information page.

The search function is a way of streamlining the process for passengers who happened to note their taxi's medallion number or who held on to their receipt, which includes that information, according to a spokesman for the city's Department of Technology and Telecommunications, Nick Sorbone.

Taxi riders who pay by credit card may also be able track down medallion numbers through their credit card companies.

Drivers are instructed to return lost items to their garages or to a nearby police precinct, the numbers of which are also listed on the Lost and Found web page.

Before the city created the medallion number search feature, passengers who lost items had no other recourse but to report the missing item to the Taxi and Limousine Commission.
