UPPER EAST SIDE — Shake Shack was getting closer to opening up on the Upper East Side Thursday with construction crews installing outdoor signs and finishing work on an outdoor eating area.

The restaurant at 154 East 86th Street, which is owned and managed by Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group, is expected to open in late July, said Leah Herman, a spokeswoman with the group.

Shake Shack began as a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park and announced its expansion into the Upper East Side, the Theatre District, NoLiTa, Miami and Kuwait in January.

Those expansion plans ran into trouble this spring, with neighborhood opposition to Meyer's plan to open a branch at 47 Spring Street in NoLiTa. Meyer eventually abandoned those plans, but reportedly continued searching for a location in SoHo.
