Location: Zuccotti Park
Zuccotti Park is a 33,000 square foot park located in Lower Manhattan near Broadway, Trinity Place, Liberty Street and Cedar Street. The park, formerly called Liberty Park, is owned by Brookfield Properties and was renamed after company chairman John Zuccotti in 2006.
Zuccotti Park was thrust into the national spotlight when it became the camp for Occupy Wall Street protesters after they marched on Wall Street on Sept. 17, 2011. Over 100 protesters had remained in the park since despite the efforts of the NYPD and Brookfield Properties to remove them.
Police arrested 70 protesters and cleared out the park before dawn on Nov. 15, 2011. Mayor Michael Bloomberg cited safety and health violations as the reason for evicting the protesters.
