The FDNY is concerned about the potential removal of fire escapes from two Greene Street buildings.
The explosion happened about 7 a.m. Friday morning, the FDNY said.
The FDNY and another hospital will add six shifts to compensate for the loss.
The fire at 388 Pearl St. began in an eighth-floor apartment, fire officials said.
Due to water pressure concerns, Inwood and Washington Heights firehouses stopped giving out caps that reduce flow.
