UPPER EAST SIDE — A speeding driver in a sedan was critically hurt early Monday on Park Avenue when she rear-ended an SUV, also injuring a passenger in the larger vehicle, an NYPD spokesman said.

The 58-year-old woman, whose name wasn't immediately released, was driving her black sedan south on Park Avenue and was between East 85th Street and East 84th Street about 12:51 a.m. when she hit the gray Jeep Grand Cherokee, police and witnesses said.

"I heard the noise. It was pretty loud, but it only lasted about two seconds. It sounded like something fell from a building," said a 23-year-old doorman who was working nearby at the time.

"[The Jeep] was really bad. It was really smashed up. I saw a woman inside the car who looked unconscious. She wasn't waking up," the doorman added.

The driver suffered critical injuries, but her condition stabilized when she was treated at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell, police said.

A passenger in the SUV, whose identity wasn't immediately released, was treated at the same hospital and listed in stable condition, police said.

Witnesses told investigators that the sedan's driver was speeding, police said.

There were no immediate arrests, police said, adding that their investigation continues.
