ELMHURST — A 11-year-old student who was showing off a BB gun at school accidentally shot a teacher in the ankle, officials said.
The student brought the gun into I.S. 5, at 50-40 Jacobus St. between Queens Boulevard and 51st Avenue, at around 2:30 p.m. Monday, police said.
The gun went off and sent a BB ricocheting off a wall, hitting his 45-year-old teacher in her ankle, according to police.
She refused medical attention, and police responded to confiscate the gun and file a juvenile report against the student. No additional information about the student was available.
Department of Education spokeswoman Toya Holness said the teacher wasn't injured.
"Nothing is more important than the safety of students and staff," she said in an email. "The incident was immediately reported and addressed."
